Frequently Asked Question

Helpful information for families considering postpartum support

About the Service

What does postpartum support involve?

Postpartum support at Softer Steps is designed to bring practical assistance to families  after bringing home a new baby. Visits focus on supporting both the mother and the home environment. This may include light household management, meal preparation, nursery organization, errand coordination, and other assistance that allows parents to focus on recovery and rest. Each visit is tailored to the household’s needs and priorities.

No. All services provided are non-medical and lifestyle-based. The support offered focuses on creating a calm home environment during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. We do not perform clinical tasks or replace licensed healthcare providers. Families should continue working with their physicians, midwives, or other healthcare professionals for all medical care.

No. Softer Steps is not a postpartum doula service. While postpartum doulas may provide education, emotional support, newborn guidance, and hands-on care after birth, our role is centered on practical in-home assistance. We help during pregnancy with preparation and the everyday needs that may become harder to manage, then continue that support postpartum by taking pressure off the household so you have more room to recover, rest, and adjust to life with your baby.

Yes.  In-home support may begin during pregnancy for clients who would benefit from additional help preparing their home and reducing their day-to-day workload before delivery.

Pregnancy and postpartum remain the primary focus of Softer Steps; however, select private support may also be available for individuals navigating other periods of recovery or significant life transition. Because needs can vary considerably outside of pregnancy and postpartum, these requests are considered individually through a private consultation.

Care Packages & Availability

Can packages be customized?

Yes. During your consultation, we will discuss your household’s needs, recovery priorities, and anticipated schedule. While we offer pre-designed care packages, additional visits or adjustments may be discussed based on availability and the level of support that would be most helpful for your family.

Yes. Softer Steps supports the household as a whole, not just baby-related needs. Visits are shaped around the priorities of your home, helping reduce the everyday responsibilities competing for your energy during pregnancy and postpartum.

Yes, we intentionally maintains a limited client capacity in order to provide personalized care. This allows each family to receive comprehensive support during an important and often demanding season of life. Because of this structure, early scheduling is recommended whenever possible.

Many families choose to schedule postpartum support during their third trimester to ensure availability around their anticipated delivery window. Because Softer Steps limits the number of families served at any given time, booking in advance is recommended whenever possible.

Scheduling and Service Areas

How far in advance should I schedule?

If you’re seeking support during pregnancy, you’re welcome to reach out whenever the need arises. For postpartum care, many families choose to schedule during the later weeks of pregnancy to help ensure availability around their anticipated delivery timeline. Because we intentionally maintain a limited client capacity, booking in advance is recommended whenever possible. Families are also welcome to inquire if support is needed sooner.

When scheduling allows, we may be able to accommodate short-notice requests during pregnancy or postpartum. Availability varies based on existing client schedules, so families needing support on short notice are encouraged to reach out. If space is available, every effort will be made to accommodate the request.

Softer Steps currently serves Northern Virginia, with additional DMV service areas planned before the end of the year. Service radius and travel considerations are discussed during your consultation to ensure visits can be scheduled reliably.

Visits & Logistics

What happens during a visit?

At the start of each visit, we review your priorities and decide where our time will be most useful. We then work through the practical needs discussed for that day, whether that means household tasks, preparation, errands, or other areas where you need an extra set of hands. Before leaving, we review what was completed and discuss anything to carry into the next visit.

Each in-home visit is 4.5 hours. The number and timing of visits depend on the care package you choose, with options ranging from a single visit to ongoing support over several weeks. During your consultation, we’ll talk through your needs and help determine which option makes the most sense for you.

Consultation Process

Is the consultation required before booking ?

Yes, every family begins with a private consultation. This allows us to review your anticipated timeline, discuss your home environment, and determine which level of support may best align with your needs.
